Daniel J. Balkin

Dan has been affiliated with Access Mortgage Research for many years. He possesses considerable marketing and product management experience. In addition to working on group studies, Dan has consulted with our clients on issues related to virtually every segment of the market from “A” credit first mortgages and home equity lines and loans to impaired credit first and second mortgages. Prior to joining the firm he had extensive industry and consulting experience. A summary of Dan’s relevant experience follows.

Consultant.
Dan has consulted extensively to the home finance industry. Included have been overall strategy assignments, Internet strategies, a marketing tracking system re-design, a study on the overall impact of technology on marketing, and launches of a direct response based sub-prime operation and an outbound telemarketing driven operation

MNC Mortgage.
As Director of Marketing Dan introduced several alternative loan origination strategies and programs to improve the performance of retail branch-based loan officers. He also oversaw cross selling efforts that created significant new sources of revenue.

While at MNC Mortgage Dan made significant contributions to Mortgage Bankers Association of America projects.

MNC Financial.
Early in his career, as Home Equity Product Manager, Dan was instrumental in building the home equity lending business of MNC Financial into one of the ten largest among U.S. commercial banks while also maintaining above average pricing and profitability. Under Dan’s direction MNC was a pioneer in the use of promotional techniques such as introductory rates and closing cost rebates. He also introduced a direct response marketing program backed by a sophisticated telemarketing capability through which over 50% of MNC’s business was eventually sourced even while branch originations were also being aggressively grown. During a second stint with MNC, Dan served as Director of Loan Product Management and Marketing and had responsibility for all consumer credit products, including MNC’s affinity lending program which marketed to groups with over 17 million members combined.

Datascope Marketing Ltd.
While Managing Director of this London, England database marketing consultancy, Dan expanded his knowledge of technology based tools marketers can use to create and drive successful programs and to improve the efficiencies of existing ones. While in Europe Dan worked for a diverse client list which included Barclays, Nutspaarbank (a Dutch bank), Commercial Union (insurance), Prudential (investments), Nedlloyd (shipping), Saab, and Volkswagen/Audi.

Educational Background

Dan earned a Masters of Scientific Management degree from The Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Alfred P. Sloan School of Business where he concentrated in Marketing and Corporate Strategy. He completed his undergraduate studies at Dartmouth College where he majored in Art History and minored in Economics.
